US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Switzerland, and UK Issue Urgent Travel Advisories Against Assam, Impacting Tourism Amid Safety Concerns in India

Thursday, March 27, 2025
Assam has recently faced travel advisories from six countries—the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Switzerland—warning their citizens against visiting the region due to concerns over the law and order situation. These advisories have created challenges for the state’s tourism sector, which heavily depends on international visitors. In response, the Assam government is taking decisive action to address these concerns and reassure the world of the region’s safety.
The state administration is working closely with India’s Ministry of External Affairs to engage with international partners and update global perceptions about Assam. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, including a recent visit by an Australian delegation to assess the situation firsthand and address security concerns. These efforts reflect the government’s commitment to clearing up misconceptions and ensuring a safe environment for tourists.
To further bolster its tourism prospects, Assam has launched several key initiatives aimed at enhancing its appeal as a prime travel destination. The ‘Promotion and Development of Tea Tourism Infrastructure in Assam,’ a project introduced in 2022–2023, focuses on improving the state’s heritage tea gardens. Selected estates are receiving grants of INR 2 crore each, aimed at enhancing their tourism infrastructure and preserving their cultural significance. Phase one saw 22 tea gardens benefiting from this initiative, with another 34 estates set to be included in the second phase.
Moreover, the Ministry of External Affairs is also addressing international security concerns through strategic diplomatic outreach. A recent delegation of foreign envoys visited Kaziranga National Park in February 2025, highlighting the region’s biodiversity and reinforcing the message of safety. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to challenge outdated stereotypes about the area and position Assam as a stable and secure destination.
The Assam government remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of both its residents and visitors. By collaborating with international organizations and implementing targeted initiatives, the state is poised to revitalize its tourism sector. Assam continues to encourage travelers to explore its rich cultural heritage, pristine landscapes, and unique experiences.
Looking forward, Assam plans to expand its tourism offerings, with a particular focus on adventure and eco-tourism, two rapidly growing sectors. The state’s abundant natural beauty, coupled with ongoing infrastructure improvements and enhanced safety measures, presents significant opportunities for both domestic and international tourists. With a strong emphasis on sustainable development and cultural exchange, Assam is positioning itself to become an even more attractive destination on the global tourism map.
