TSA will let you bring pizza, live lobsters and other food on a plane
The Transportation Security Administration, or TSA for short, is known for banning lots of items from passing through security checkpoints.
However, there are some items that you can surprisingly bring through the checkpoints, especially if you are hungry and want to bring food on the plane with you.
You may not be able to bring a bottle of water through TSA screening, but you can bring these ten food items through security.
Fresh Eggs
According to the TSA, fresh eggs are allowed in carry-on and checked luggage.
However, the agency notes that if you are bringing these eggs through a security checkpoint, it is encouraged that you keep these items uncluttered so as not to obstruct the images on the x-ray scanners.
Creamy Cheese
TSA says you can pack creamy cheese into both checked and carry-on luggage, with some restrictions for carry-on bags.
According to the agency, creamy cheese can be packed in your carry-on so long as it is less than or equal to 3.4-ounces and separated from other items in your carry-on.
Dips & Spreads
TSA says you can pack dips and spreads into both checked and carry-on luggage, with some restrictions for carry-on bags.
According to the agency, dips and spreads can be packed in your carry-on so long as it is less than or equal to 3.4 ounces and separated from other items in your carry-on.
Fresh Fruits & Vegetables
You can pack fresh fruits and vegetables in both your checked and carry-on luggage, but with some restrictions based on where you are flying from in the U.S.
According to the TSA, solid food items are allowed in checked and carry-on bags if flying within the continental U.S.
Liquid or gel food items are also allowed if flying in the continental U.S. in carry-ons so long as they are less than or equal to 3.4 ounces. Otherwise, they must be placed in checked luggage.
If you’re flying from Hawaii, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands to the mainland U.S., fresh fruits and vegetables are not allowed because invasive plant pests can spread.
Fresh Meat & Seafood
According to the TSA, you can bring your fresh meat and seafood in carry-on and checked luggage with some restrictions.
If the food is packed with ice or ice packs, it must be completely frozen solid. Otherwise, it will not be allowed.
You can also pack the food in dry ice, so long as it is in checked luggage, the dry ice is no more than 5 pounds and the package is properly vented and marked.
Ice Cream
TSA says you can pack ice cream into both checked and carry-on luggage, with some restrictions for carry-on bags.
According to the agency, ice cream can be packed in your carry-on so long as it is less than or equal to 3.4 ounces and separated from other items in your carry-on.
Gravy
According to the TSA, gravy can be packed in both checked and carry-on luggage.
For carry-on luggage, the gravy must be less than or equal to 3.4 ounces.
Live Lobster
You can bring live lobsters through TSA security so long as they are in “clear, plastic, spill-proof” receptacles, according to the TSA.
While TSA will have no problem with you carrying a live lobster through security, it is strongly recommended that you check with your airline to see if you can bring your lobster on board the aircraft.
Pizza
According to TSA, pizza is allowed in both checked and carry-on luggage.
The agency even posted a tongue-in-cheek tweet on X about bringing pizza onto a plane back in May.
Pies & Cakes
According to the TSA, you can pack cakes and pies into your checked and carry-on luggage, so long as they are separated from other items in your carry-on.
This is to make sure the food doesn’t obstruct other items on the x-ray machine.
