Traveling this Labor Day weekend? Some of the best practices for staying safe
Whether it’s flights or road trips, Labor Day weekend is typically one of the busiest times of the year for travel. This year, Labor Day weekend is expected to be one of the busiest travel periods on record. On Friday, KCRA 3 talked to experts with the Transportation Security Administration, the Office of Traffic Safety and AAA about how to prioritize safety while traveling. Here’s what they recommend. Transportation Security Administration Dale Keller, the TSA’s federal security director, said the numbers on anticipated travelers come from individual airports. More than 23,000 passengers were screened on Thursday and more than 23,000 were expected to be screened on Friday, according to Keller. Keller said the biggest challenge for TSA during periods of increased travel is getting support and cooperation from passengers during the screening process. “There are many things that officers have to do and they vary depending on the individual situation and passenger,” Keller said. “When the passengers start comparing themselves to others or comparing how things were at a different airport, it makes the job a lot more difficult for our officers.”See the full interview with Keller for his thoughts on what passengers can do to make things easier for TSA officers.Office of Traffic Safety Tim Weisberg with the Office of Traffic Safety joined KCRA 3 to talk about how OTS is partnering with Caltrans to keep the roads clean this weekend. Increased holiday road travel typically leads to littering and Weisberg said a road full of debris could lead to unexpected swerving and crashes on the road. There is also wildfire risk amplified by people discarding flammable products on or near California roadways in the summer.
