New Years travel prompts fresh road safety reminder from RCMP

Saskatchewan RCMP and provincial highways officials are reminding motorists to take extra precautions on the roads as winter travel continues into the New Year.

With winter conditions capable of changing quickly across the province, police say preparation and caution remain essential for anyone travelling during the colder months.

“Really, this is just the beginning of winter driving in Saskatchewan,” RCMP spokesperson Keely Grasser said during a recent media availability. “It’s important that everyone who drives in Saskatchewan understands that they need to be prepared for winter weather.”

Grasser emphasized that favourable weather at the start of a trip does not guarantee safe driving conditions along the way.

“Just because the sun’s out doesn’t mean that you can abandon those safety tips,” she said.

Drivers are being encouraged to check road conditions and forecasts before heading out and to delay travel when conditions are unsafe.

“Understand what you’re driving into before you set out,” Grasser said. “If you have to delay, do it.”

Police also recommend motorists ensure their vehicles are properly equipped for winter travel, including having a full tank of fuel, warm clothing, food, water and a charged cellphone.

“That’s a scary situation to be in and if you can prevent it, please do,” Grasser said, referring to drivers becoming stranded without adequate preparation.

The Ministry of Highways echoed the call for caution, noting winter road conditions can vary significantly across Saskatchewan’s highway network.

“Drive to current road conditions,” Ministry of Highways representative Dan Palmer said. “Just because it says posted speed limit of 80 or 110 kilometres an hour doesn’t mean you should travel at that speed.”

Palmer said checking the provincial highway hotline before leaving and again before returning home is an important step in trip planning.

“Ensure that you’re making an informed decision before you go,” he said.

Both RCMP and highways officials stressed the importance of attentive driving during winter months, including slowing down, avoiding distractions and remaining alert.

“Drive for a speed that’s appropriate for the conditions,” Grasser said. “The posted speed limit is for ideal conditions.”

As New Year’s celebrations approach, RCMP are also reminding drivers to follow basic safety rules behind the wheel.

“Wear your seat belt. Don’t drive while distracted,” Grasser said. “Put the phones and other things away and mostly don’t drive while impaired.”

“Our ultimate goal as a Saskatchewan RCMP is helping people get to their destination safe,” she said. “Please do your part too.”
