Local news briefs: Armchair Travel returns with a trip to Greece via food

Take a ‘tour’ of Greece via a delicious Greek food dinner (and you don’t need a passport)

Savona dinner, dance, and auction

Enjoy an evening of Mexican food which also features a DJ, dance, and auction on Saturday, March 8 at the Savona Community Hall. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner is served at 6:30, the auction starts at 7:30, and dancing commences at 9 p.m.

Tickets are $20 per person and can be purchased at Miller’s Crossing in Savona. The event is sponsored by the Savona Elementary School PAC, with funds raised going to support student activities at the school.

Kamloops Seedy Saturday

The Kamloops Farmers’ Market is holding a Seedy Saturday event on March 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 140 Laburnum Street, Kamloops. The event will feature display booths from local community groups with an emphasis on local food, seeds, gardening, and food security, as well as Kamloops Farmers’ Market vendors, including some with ready-to-eat foods. Admission is by donation.

Lillooet Seedy Sunday

The Lillooet Agriculture and Food Society is holding its 15th annual Seedy Sunday on March 9, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lillooet Rec Centre. The event will include seed sales and swaps, the Lillooet seed library, local market vendors and display tables, a raffle, the Rainshadow Café, and more. TNRD communications survey

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District is encouraging residents (in municipalities and electoral areas) to take a short survey, as it seeks public feedback to understand how residents interact with the regional district and how they would like to receive information about local government initiatives. The objective of this survey is to gain insights into how residents receive information from the TNRD, what information they look for, whether they are satisfied with a number of topics related to communications, and how information sharing could be increased or improved.

Women’s meet-up

Looking to broaden your social circle, or find other women to attend functions or travel with? Then come on down to the Ashcroft Legion on Tuesdays (12:30 p.m. to ?) to meet with other mature women who are looking for like-minded people to do things with. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, March 11.

Clinton Seniors’ daffodil tea

The Clinton Seniors’ Association is holding their annual Daffodil Tea on Wednesday, March 12 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Clinton Memorial Hall. Admission is $7 per person, and includes a delicious strawberry shortcake tea.

Potted daffodils will be available for purchase ($6 each), and a contribution will be made to the BC Cancer Society. If you cannot make it to the tea, strawberry shortcake and/or daffodils can be delivered to you on March 12. To pre-order, call Gloria at (604) 813-1752.

Spences Bridge Community Club

The SBCC will be holding its next monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 12, starting at 7 p.m. at Clemes Hall. All residents are encouraged to come to the meeting and learn about the many exciting events and opportunities for volunteering that are coming up in the Bridge.

Trails engagement session

Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism is holding a trails engagement session at the Clinton Memorial Hall on Thursday, March 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The goal is to get public input about CCCT’s proposed Regional Trails Framework, and will feature information about key components and priorities of the project, what has been accomplished to date, and future plans.

Community social

The Ashcroft Literacy Program and the Village of Cache Creek are hosting a community social event at the Cache Creek Community Hall (basement meeting room) on Friday, March 14 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. This fun, free family event will feature literacy activities, games, snacks, refreshments, and door prizes, and all are welcome (children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult).

Kamloops Film Festival

The 29th annual Kamloops Film Festival is taking place now through March 15 at the Paramount Theatre in Kamloops. The festival features a captivating line-up of award-winning films from around the world in a variety of genres, including documentaries, comedies, dramas, and Canadian films.

The event also includes the Kamloops Independent Short Shorts (KISS) Film Fest, a celebration of the short film format and local filmmakers. For more information, go to www.thekfs.ca.

Armchair travel

Experience a taste of Greece at the Ashcroft HUB’s next Armchair Travel event, taking place on Thursday, March 27 starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each, and attendees will be treated to a fabulous dinner of Greek food. Tiny Art Show

Check out the works on display at the Ashcroft Library as part of this year’s Tiny Art Show. Local artists created works on 5” by 5” canvases, and they can be viewed at the library and online at www.tnrl.ca, where you can check out all the wonderful works. You can vote (online or in the library) for your favourite work through March 29, and all the works will be on display until mid-April.

Soccer registration open

From now through April 2, the South Cariboo Minor Soccer Association is taking registrations for the 2025 season, which begins on April 14. Players aged 5–16 from Ashcroft, Cache Creek, Clinton, Logan Lake, Lytton, Lilloet, and the surrounding area are welcome, and new this year is a pre-school team in Ashcroft. To sign up, go to

Clinton Citizen of the Year

The Spirit of Clinton is seeking nominations for the 2024 Clinton Citizen of the Year.

Do you know someone who goes above and beyond for the community? Someone who embodies the Spirit of Clinton through their Dedication, kindness, and service? Recognize them by nominating them as the village’s Citizen of the Year for 2024. Ukulele social circle

Join the ukulele circle of friends every Thursday in Ashcroft from 2 to 3 p.m. (venue to be determined). The cost is $5 per session, which includes lessons, and some ukuleles are available. You can check online sites such as Facebook Marketplace to purchase your own from $15 or up, and ukuleles can also be borrowed for free through the Thompson-Nicola Regional Library system; visit your local library for details. Grief support library

Did you know that the Ashcroft and District Hospice Society has a free library of grief support resources for people of all ages? In addition to pamphlets and books, the society also has contact information for organizations that can provide even more resources and support.  

The society’s office, at 509 Railway Avenue in Ashcroft, is open on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For assistance outside office hours, call (778) 207-7575.

School’s Out at the HUB

Looking for something for kids to do after school from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday? Register them for the free School’s Out program at the Ashcroft HUB, which is for children aged 5 through 12 and features crafts, science, physical activities, and more.

Clinton walking sessions

Anyone who wants to do some walking but would like to stay warm and dry can walk indoors at the Clinton Memorial Hall every Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon. All adults of any ability are welcome; just make sure to bring a pair of clean, dry shoes in which to walk. If you have a walking stick, cane, wheelchair, or walker, someone will clean it off for you. Drop in for as little or long as you like and enjoy some exercise, or just visit for a spell.
