Jamaica Travel Safety Ratings Improved by Canadian, US Governments

Jamaica tourism and political officials say they’re pleased the Canadian and US governments have eased travel warnings for visitors to the popular Caribbean destination.
In a revised advisory issued 29MAY, 2025, the US State Department lowered Jamaica’s risk level to Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. Officials cited a decrease in violent crime since 2024.
The Canadian government on 03JUN also bumped Jamaica to Level 2, which suggests Canadians “exercise a high degree of caution” which is an improvement of the previous ‘avoid non-essential travel’ ranking.
“Given the significance and importance of the tourism sector to Jamaica, we are pleased to see that the combined efforts of our national, regional, and local authorities to enhance public safety are being reflected in the lowering of travel advisories in both the US and Canada,” Angella Bennett, Regional Director, Canada for the JTB, told Open Jaw.
“We take visitor safety seriously and work hard to create a welcoming environment for visitors as they come to enjoy unique travel experiences that cater to a diverse traveller demographic.”
Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the changes reflect the hard work of Jamaica’s security forces and Government agencies.
“We have been deliberate and data-driven in our approach to reducing crime and improving the safety of our people. Jamaica remains one of the most vibrant and welcoming destinations in the world, and we are pleased that our progress is being recognized,” Holness said, pointing to a 43.3% reduction in reported murders this year.
According to the Jamaica Observer, Holness on 29MAY told a news conference that the travel advisory upgrade “is not incidental…It is the direct result of years of targeted policy implementation, investment in security infrastructure, and sustained diplomatic engagement.
“It signals to the international community that Jamaica is safer and a more secure destination, not only for visitors, but for residents,” the Prime Minister said.
The US is still urging Americans “do not travel” to specific communities throughout Jamaica due to ongoing safety concerns. Those areas generally are well away from popular tourist zones.
“While violent crime in Jamaica has decreased since 2024, it remains statistically high throughout the country,” the US travel warning site states. “Tourist areas generally see lower rates of violent crime than other parts of the country. The homicide rate reported by the Government of Jamaica is among the highest in the Western Hemisphere.”
“Crimes tend to be concentrated within what the police refer to as “traditional hot spots” or “high-risk communities”, but can take place anywhere and at any time.”
Nearly 100 countries around the world are in the level 2 or “yellow” category on the Canadian government travel site, including Jamaica, France, Mexico, Sweden, The Dominican Republic, Spain, Thailand, Italy and Hong Kong.
