Is it safe to travel to Belize? US issues level 2 travel advisory

If you’re planning a trip to Belize, the U.S. government might want you to reconsider.
According to the U.S. Department of State, Belize is currently under a level 2 travel advisory while Belize City is under a level 3.
The Central American country serves as a key destination for numerous cruise lines. Among them, the Carnival Dream, Carnival Legend, Carnival Miracle, Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas, and the Regal Princess, departing from Galveston, Texas, all include stops in this vibrant locale, as per GalvestonCruises.com.
Here is why the state department is warning American travelers to be wary of this destination.
Why is Belize under a level 2 travel advisory?
According to a summary from the State Department, Belize is under a travel warning for the following reasons:
Violent crimes, including sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies, and murder, are common, even in tourist areas and during daylight hours. A large share of these crimes is linked to gang activity. Due to high crime rates, travelers are urged to exercise caution when visiting the south side of Belize City. Local law enforcement lacks the necessary resources and training to respond effectively to serious crimes, and most cases remain unsolved and unprosecuted.
If you’ve already confirmed your trip to the country, the State Department also has a list of things U.S. travelers should be aware of:
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Avoid walking or driving at night.
- Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
- Be extra vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
- Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry.
- Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
- Follow the Department of State on Facebook and X/Twitter.
- Review the Country Security Report for Belize.
- Prepare a contingency plan for emergencies. Review the Traveler’s Checklist.
- Visit the CDC page for the latest Travel Health Information related to your travel.
Why is Belize City under a level 3 travel advisory?
Although typical tourist areas in Belize City remain unaffected, the advisory highlights that violent crime is common in the Southside district, which includes regions from south of the Haulover Creek Canal to Fabers Road.
The State Department is warning U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to Belize City. Belize City’s Southside, south of Haulover Creek Canal and extending south to Fabers Road, is known for gang-related violence. However, this area doesn’t typically overlap with tourist destinations. Visitors should exercise caution and maintain situational awareness while practicing good safety and security measures.
What are the travel advisory levels?
The state department has four levels for travel advisories. Here are the four and what they mean:
- Level 1: Exercise normal precautions.
- Level 2: Exercise increase precaution.
- Level 3: Reconsider travel.
- Level 4: Do not travel.
