Holiday magic: B.C.-based BDMs go carolling at travel agencies, support food bank

It’s that special time of year again.

Travel agencies in Lower Mainland and Greater Vancouver were treated to some festive carolling on Tuesday (Dec. 10) as a cheerful crew of “elves” – 13 business development managers – got together to visit partner offices throughout the area.

Dressed in festive attire and armed with warm smiles and classic holiday tunes, the BDMs set out to share moments of gratitude for the trade’s “unwavering dedication and hard work throughout the year,” said Emily Spadafora of Sandos Hotels & Palmaïa, House of Aïa, sharing a recap of the day – an annual tradition in Western Canada – with PAX.

“As 2024 comes to a close, we felt it was more important than ever to connect with our partners,” said Spadafora. “And while we can’t reach everyone, our gratitude extends to all our partners who contribute to the success and resilience of this industry.”

Travel gives back

The group visited Expedia HQ, Expedia Kerrisdale, Kerrisdale Travel & Cruise, Expedia Richmond, Transat Travel Ladner, Expedia Ladner, Expedia SurDel, Marlin Travel Delta and Maritime Travel Sullivan.

And their mission went beyond spreading holiday cheer – it was also about giving back.

Thanks to the generous spirit of the travel agency community, the singing BDMs managed to collect $808 in cash donations and filled three large boxes with non-perishable goods for the Surrey Food Bank – “a testament to what we can achieve together”

“This season is a chance to reflect on the power of collaboration and the relationships that form the foundation of our industry’s success. Here’s to the holiday spirit, teamwork, and an exciting year ahead!” said Spadafora.

And for those wondering…where will these holiday elves show up next year?

“Stay tuned…you’ll never know,” said Spadafora with a wink.

The BDMs in attendance included Fiona Schonwille (Holland America & Seabourn Cruises, “our fabulous leader of the elves”), Joel Danyluk (Carnival) Carlos Peralta (Melia Hotels); Cindy Chau, (Exoticca); Emily Spadafora (Sandos Hotels & Palmaïa, House of Aïa); Rino Falvo (Exodus); Paula Rizos (TTC Tour Brands); Nicole Davey (TravelBrands); Xenia Slosarcik and Gina Goranson (Globus Family of Brands); Shane Dineen (WestJet Vacations); Steph Vazquez (Princess Cruises) and James Bond (Manulife).

In celebration of the fun and successful day, Fiona Schonewille shared the following poem:

‘Twas two weeks before Christmas

when all through the town

all the agents were stirring to finally slow down.

Research was finalized and they shared the good news

That their clients could start packing and get ready for their cruise.

Families were excited and snug in their beds

while visions of their vacations danced in their heads.

When outside the Agency there rose such a clatter

Travel advisers sprang from their desks to see what was the matter

Away to the window as quick as a flash

They tore open the door to see a bus arrive filled with Sass!

Out they went to see who it could be,

but 13 BDM’s filled with glee. 

With a little driver taking them all around town,

visiting agencies and spreading Christmas cheer all around.

Now Stephanie, and Fiona, and James and Joel,

On, Carlos & Cindy, Emily and Rino,

and who could forget Nicole,

and a bunch more elves we snagged to come along for the stroll!

With all these BDMs leading the way,

Hoping the roads stay clear on this day.

We look forward to visiting you and having a sing along,

Join us in belting out a Christmas Song.

We ask you to dress up in your holiday gear,

As fancy or festive and bring lots of cheer!

Our elves will be collecting money donations and food.
